Thanks to a little trial and error, this clever homeowner created a kitchen with natural textures and a palette of earthy greens that carry through the rest of the house

Hayley George, 46 (English teacher), Zane George, 46 (banker), Moby, 15, Mabel, 13, and Emerson, 9.
“I have a Harry & Co handbag which is a beautiful mix of olive grey and green, and I used this as my colour palette across the house. The kitchen cupboards are soft green, which blends with the darker green of the outdoor room, the downstairs bathroom vanity, and our fire, which is an amazing deep forest green,” says Hayley.
Hayley wanted the white cabinetry to look a little like a Mondrian geometrical painting. She opted to streamline the look with handle-less drawers and cupboards which look great but “pop open whenever the kids slouch on them so have taken some getting used to”.
As the scope of the renovation grew into an almost complete rebuild, the budget ballooned. Here’s a reality check from Hayley: “Add another third to your budget at the very least, another third to your timeline, and a third to your emotional intelligence quotient for the sake of all your working and family relationships.”
