The Lighthouse – architectural icon in Takapuna

Tucked into the Takapuna cliff and enjoying a dazzling waterfront position, this Kitchener Road property is an architectural masterpiece. A true triumph of construction, design and engineering, the residence perfectly embraces the contour of the 888m2 land and is built over five breathtaking levels.

Known as The Lighthouse, it was originally designed in 1954 by Group Architects’ Ivan Juriss, then reimagined by architect Felicity Wallace in 1991. The current owner has lived here for the past 10 years and has recently refreshed and restored the inside, to retain its innate luxury and drama.

The top entrance is down a driveway, where a private pathway – complete with marble compass – arrives at the main entrance. From here the outlook is nothing short of astounding – from the striking, sweeping rooflines of the home, mid-level infinity pool and the black rocks and sparkling blue of the bay beyond. A floating staircase down the side of the volcanic rock wall arrives at the front door. Inside, a profusion of glass is complemented with tones of cedar, rimu and matai that lend a sense of warmth and character. The layout, boasting three separate living rooms and two kitchens, has been designed to offer flexibility, making it appealing for blended or extended families, intergenerational living or a home and income.

All levels are wide and face directly out to sea, capturing 180-degree panoramic views and morning sunrises that flood rooms with light and warmth. It’s located within its own microclimate, so protected from the prevailing winds and flanked by headland points either side. Despite its iconic and unobstructed views, the property has been astutely designed for optimum privacy – completely immersed in the view but with no one able to look in.

The pool is accessed on entry level, which has been considered for entertaining. It has an open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen that flows out to the deck, as well as a decadent bedroom and tiled ensuite and staircase to a separate office. The next level down has two bedrooms, one with its own private deck, plus a bathroom and second laundry.

The main living floor is spectacular, with towering vaulted ceilings and walls of windows framing the open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining zones. The kitchen is brand new, remodelled to better work for entertaining, and boasts top-of-the-line appliances, a butler’s pantry and large walk-in wine cellar built deep into the cliff.

Ground level is designed for children – three bedrooms, a large bathroom and main laundry. The tiled lounge opens out to the flat lawn, where an automatic gate accesses the beachfront walkway. The driveway provides occasional vehicle access and is entered via Audrey Road at the base of the property, which arrives through an electric security gate to the internal garage.

While this spectacular property is a celebrated feat of architecture, it’s also a warm, comfortable and flexible family retreat on the North Shore’s famed Golden Mile.
