Article by Property Press

Long considered one of New Zealand’s most affordable regions, Waitaki has seen a property boom in recent years. Here’s our pick of where to buy

For decades it’s been the sleeping beauty of the South Island. Waitaki District is blessed with spectacular scenery, lakes, beaches, ski fields and the heritage city of Oamaru. The district, that straddles North Otago and South Canterbury, is experiencing a renaissance of interest that has seen a property boom in recent years.

Long regarded as one of the most affordable regions of New Zealand, it is now punching above its weight, recording a median house price rise over the past four years of 48.3 percent, against a national average of 28.6 percent. There’s still plenty of very attractive properties selling for extremely reasonable prices but with investors looking at Waitaki with increasing interest it will be interesting to see what the market will hold in coming years.
