Get crafty with these four Christmas projects using fabric

Get crafty and give Christmas a personal, handmade touch with these four clever projects using fabric. From gift wrapping to stockings, it’s so simple!

Gift bags

Making fabric gift bags is a little more expensive than paper ones but they look amazing and we guarantee the receiver will not throw them away. They’re also great for awkward-shaped presents that might poke through wrapping paper. Simply sew up all sides except top and pop in your present. Finish with a ribbon tie.

Placement and napkin

Cut a piece of fabric 50cm x 44cm for your placemat and 40cm x 34cm for the napkin. Turn over a 2cm hem all the way around both items and pin. Sew the hems and you’re ready to use.

Christmas tree skirt

If you’re sick of seeing the legs of your Christmas tree stand, then a Christmas tree skirt is for you. It’s super-easy and you can make it to fit any stand. We took a piece of cotton canvas about 1m square and cut out a 90cm-diameter circle.

Draw a line from the edge to the centre and cut along the line. Turn over a 1cm hem along the slit and around the skirt. Sew hems. Slip skirt onto tree base and hide the slit at the back.

Stockings

Print out a stocking template from the internet. Cut out your template and place on top of 2 fabric pieces. Draw around the template and then cut out. With right sides facing, sew around the sides and foot of stocking, about 1cm in from the edge. At the top of your stocking sew a ribbon loop for hanging. Turn right way out, ready for Santa!
