Organise kids’ rooms
Before getting stuck into reorganising your kid’s bedroom or spare room, have a think about what is working and what is not working in the space. Involve your child in the process if you are working on your kid’s room (depending on their age); it’s their room and their stuff and they’ll be able to tell you what works and what doesn’t. It may be necessary to move some furniture around to create better flow and functionality. You may need to acquire some storage too, but this will be determined as you go along. Have your label maker (or labels and a permanent marker) at hand.
For kids’ rooms, start planning zones with your child: where would be a good place to put books, games, soft toys, dress-ups? Each category will need a zone assigned to it (zones can be multi-purpose, though, such as games and floor play.) As you work by category, think practically. Put things that are frequently used in an easy-to-access place, and items that are not used as often up higher. Durable clear-plastic crates and containers with labels and/or pictures work really well for Lego, toys, games etc. Baskets are great for dress-ups and soft toys. A top choice is cube shelving with fabric or rattan baskets in each cube to keep items tidy or contained. Whatever containers you decide on, they should have some sort of handle or grip.
Once you have organised everything, habits need to be put in place in order to keep clutter at bay; your child will almost certainly need ongoing support with this!

- Create habits to keep clutter at bay.
- Review and declutter seasonally.
