Christchurch-based Resene colour consultant Rebecca Long shares her forecast for this year’s top paint trends

What are the most popular colours for 2016?
We’re seeing a lot more dusky, smoky pastels. Clear, bright pastel shades have been favoured lately, but now they are getting a dirtier, slightly grey edge to them – they’re looking a bit more grown up. We have a pinky tan, and a strong beige shade that is becoming really popular. Navy and charcoal are very on-trend too – they’re like the new black.

What influences colour trends?
Decorating trends generally follow fashion and fabrics. You will often see a colour featured in clothing first, then paint and home decor will gradually follow suit. In New Zealand, we are largely influenced by the colour trends in big overseas cities like London and Paris.

Are there any spaces in the home that particular colours are more suited to?
Navy and other dark, strong shades are good choices for living rooms and lounges, as they give a cosy feel. Smoky duck egg blue is a top bedroom colour trend, as it is quite peaceful and soothing. Feature ceilings are becoming popular, and bold doors are a fun way to experiment with colour. People are certainly getting braver and more daring with paint colours and effects.

What are your top tips for choosing paint colours?
I encourage people to show their personality with colour schemes – you don’t want your house.
