It took six-months to renovate this cottage into an inviting family home

Article by real living

This couple’s 10-year renovation plan was executed in just six months – transforming their worker’s cottage into a family home with splashes of colour

The six month cottage renovation

This turn-of-the-century worker’s cottage in an inner-Sydney suburb it needed a lot of work when married couple Kathy and John purchased it.

However this design-savvy couple know their way around a renovation: John is a builder and Kathy is a project manager at the renovation company they run together, Urban Splash.

They spent 10 years planning the renovation and the house was tackled over six months in 2012. The ground floor rooms were shuffled around and  a second storey was added. The formal dining room was converted into a third bedroom, while the main bathroom and laundry were moved to the centre of the home.

The interior once featured green walls and dark floorboards, and is now a crisp white (Dulux ‘Natural White) with bold and judicious use of colour and pattern

“It feels amazing to come home to it,” says Kathy. “The space is practical and inviting and John and I have rediscovered entertaining. Plus we can go outside and set up a picnic or play games with our children.”
