A new Auckland suburb offers a lesson in high-density living

Auckland is on the path to higher-density living. To find out what this looks like, we visited a show home in the brand-new suburb of Hobsonville Point

With urban house prices – especially in Auckland – making central-city living unachievable for many, house-buyers are turning their attention to the outskirts of major centres where large-scale developments are booming. Auckland’s Unitary Plan now allows for higher housing density so this seemed like the perfect time to visit a brand-new development and get an insight into how our urban landscape is evolving.

New-build style secrets

  • Furnish with colour and texture If you find your new home looks a little bland when you move in, don’t worry. Walls don’t have to be the sole source of colour and texture. Invest in cushions, rugs, art, vinyl, lamps, bedding and throws – you’ll be amazed at the difference a couple of colourful accents can make.
  • Landscape your garden Your new-build probably won’t come with a particularly elaborate garden. So if you have a little cash left over, why not invest in your garden? Remember, greenery can take years to mature, so opt for potted colour, beautiful timber screens (check out Abodo’s new collaboration with David Trubridge) and vertical gardens (we love the Prai vertical garden system available from HappyHappyJoyJoy online).
  • Invest in quality window treatments Whatever your style – be it the simplicity of shutters or blinds or the luxe look of full-length curtains – investing in stylish window treatments will greatly lift a room, and they will be a pleasure to open every morning.
