4 ways you can use everyday household items for festive decor

Did you know your kitchen cupboards house an array of items you can use creatively to make a stylish festive statement? Here’s how to get started

1. Add some twinkle

A subtle way to add a festive touch to your home this Christmas is to take a large glass vase that you use for flowers during the year and pop a set of LED seed lights inside it. These cute lights are available in white and copper tones, in varying lengths and in battery and plug-in options. This simple yet effective display can be used all year round, too.

2. Use foliage

A household tray can be transformed into a gorgeous centrepiece for your dining table. You can whip up this display in no time.
Simply place some foliage around a tray – we used magnolia but pohutukawa will add a festive air – and place three different-sized candles in the centre. There you have it: an instant centrepiece that can also be used for other special occasions. Make sure you don’t leave unattended while candles are burning.

3. Make your frames festive

Freshen up your space for the holiday season by swapping out your framed prints for some fun festive statements. Some designers and artists offer free downloadable prints – Pinterest has a good selection – or you could buy prints from a craft market or art website.

More creative types could make their own designs. After Christmas just return your original prints to their frames.

4. Fill glass bottles

Everyday bottles can be turned into stylish candleholders by removing the labels and adding some greenery. Select thin fronds so they will fit through the tops of the bottles. Once foliage is in place, fill bottles with water and pop a candle in the top. Leave a small gap between the water and the base of the candle.

These are lovely grouped on a table or sideboard or would look equally enchanting as a Christmas table centrepiece.
