The Block NZ: Maree & James Relaxed Hamptons cover challenge

This winning cover captured the classic beach vibe of Hollywood’s hottest holiday destination

The block NZ_MareeJames

Starting point: We supplied Maree and James with the Maverick easy chair from Dawson’s Furniture (back corner) and the Mancini side table from French Country Collections. The walls were painted in Dulux Colours of NZ ‘Mt Aspiring’. The couple sourced the other items from Freedom and Junk & Disorderly.

Alex’s top tips to get the look:

✚ You don’t have to live in the Hamptons (a beach-side community in Long Island, New York State) to get this look in your home. Very simply, it’s a beachy feel with a more sophisticated vibe rather than bachy.

✚ Try not to take the ‘by the ocean’ look too literally by displaying shell sculptures and images of lighthouses. Make sure it’s subtler and less obvious than that. Take clues from nature with natural fibres such as hemp matting, blue, green and white tones, fresh linens, worn blue denims and wooden features.

✚ Freshness in colour choices is tip top. Bright whites, navy blues, foamy blues and minty green colours would all work. It’s a beach-inspired palette with a laid back feel.

✚ Add art that ties the space together. You could choose one huge piece or cluster favourite pieces together in a gallery wall. Either way, you are adding a visual element to the space that will bring the room together and give it a big exclamation mark.

✚ Live comfortably. Choose seating that not only looks good but feels good too. There is nothing worse than sitting down to relax and finding the sofas are more about the look and less about the comfort factor. Try before you buy. Go out and road test some furniture for yourself.
