Sometimes the best style inspiration can be found in the past. This bohemian bedroom is my throwback to the 1970s, featuring a groovy colour palette that’s been applied to a modern setting.
Dulux ‘Molesworth’ on the walls provides a warm, neutral backdrop which has then been continued on the floor to help create a look of low-key luxury.
I had a very specific colour palette in mind for this bedroom, so rather than searching for a piece of art that would fit, I decided to make the art myself. DIY artwork can go wrong, and I am certainly no Rita Angus, so I admit I was a little tentative once I had the paint brush in hand.
Using testpots of Dulux ‘Kingsland’, ‘Tikitiki’ and ‘Invercargill’, I sketched a pattern onto the canvas that would allow me to play with these colours in an abstract way. Sticking to simple rock and mountain shapes worked well for this concept and I’m really happy with how my foray into painting turned out. The canvas adds a lovely organic element to this bedroom, with the bonus of knowing it’s an original work. Give it a try at your place!
Bright ochre bedlinen brings a splash of sunshine to the space, while natural jute, leather and ceramic accessories add depth with texture. Layering the bed with colours that pair well with my DIY art was a way to make this spring bedroom hang together perfectly – just like a knotted shirt and a great pair of flares.
