The ensuite bathroom is covered in stunning marble tiles from European Ceramics and Stone. This space was once a sunroom off the bedroom.

Who lives here? Jo Clelland (hair and makeup artist and mum), Mat Vermeulen (MD of Ceva Logistics),  Mila.

Location Grey Lynn, Auckland.

Jo, How long have you lived here? We bought the house a year ago, to renovate. We only got half way through the project before we found out Mat was given a huge job offer in Sydney. So we’re moving to Sydney!

What was the ultimate goal? To create a two bathroom, three bedroom house from a home that had one tiny bathroom. We engaged architects Lloyd Hartley and dealt with Mike Hartley on the project, who came up with the fantastic idea to turn the bedroom with sunroom into a master with ensuite.

DIY details

Jo, which room have you renovated? Stage one of the renovation included extending the main bathroom to twice the size and turning the sunroom adjoining the master bedroom into an ensuite.

How long did your makeover take? Five months.

Describe the rooms then: The main bathroom was tiny. We used space from the third bedroom to enlarge it and to cater for a 1.7-metre bath and walk-in shower. The ensuite was the sunroom!

Describe the rooms now: They have a beautiful palette with an industrial edge with black accents.

What did you do to the spaces? Our builder Ross MacPherson from Ram Builders came highly recommended by Mike Hartley – he had worked with him on many multi-million-dollar homes. He was fantastic to deal with and nothing was ever an issue. His attention to detail was sublime. I highly recommend  him to anyone who needs a top-notch builder. He took the whole floor out, including the joists and bearers in both spaces in order to have the tiles flush with the floorboards once finished, with the inclusion of the most beautiful fall of tiles leading to an industrial grill at the drain end.

Budget

What was your best buy? My best investment buy would have to be the crystal vintage Murano chandeliers.

Standout feature? The marble tiles from European Ceramics and Stone (pictured below in the ensuite).

Styling

Describe your interior style: My interior style is clean lines with luxury finishes and an industrial edge, with a bit of art deco vintage glamour added to the mix.

How did you choose your colour palette? Our architect had very similar ideas on aesthetics for the project and once I started to explain what I wanted, we worked really well together.
