How to create an outdoor bathing sanctuary
As the rest of the home becomes increasingly automated and digitised, bathrooms are reverting to nature. Architects and homeowners alike have rediscovered the appeal of bathing outdoors, and we’re first to admit they’ve got a point. What could be more relaxing or romantic than soaking in a bath with nothing but the stars above you and the rustle of the wind through leaves? If you don’t have space for an outdoor tub, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to bring the outdoors into your bathroom so you can enjoy a natural bathing experience all year long.
All white
White is a global bathroom staple and works equally well in interior and external spaces. Line an outdoor shower with white or stone-coloured tiles and team them with plenty of wood for a look that says Scandinavian chic. If you’re working inside, white walls and bathware create the illusion of space and a floor-to-ceiling window will connect the room to the outside for a spa-like atmosphere. Vertical wooden slats will provide privacy from prying eyes in urban areas, without obstructing your view as you relax.
Soak it up
A freestanding tub is the ultimate indulgence when it comes to outdoor bathing and copper is the biggest trend right now. The burnished finish of copper has accents of green, which helps it blend seamlessly with nature and makes a tawny tub a beautiful centrepiece. What’s more, copper is renowned for its durability, which is a key consideration for any outdoor bathing area. Accessorise your tub with dark wood and flax to be transported to the Pacific islands or set it against an ochre-coloured wall for a warm, Mediterranean look.
Creative colour
Coloured and patterned tiles are the easiest way to create a theme in your bathroom, whether inside or in the great outdoors. When designing your room, decide on the look you want and choose your colours and patterns accordingly. So, for a Moroccan feel opt for geometric patterns in earthy tones and pair with copper tapware. For a Greek island-inspired look choose a simple colour scheme of white and sky blue and accessorise with natural driftwood-style cabinetry and stoneware.
