Trend report: Deep navy, soft velvet and luxe gold

For the ultimate luxe looking interior look no further than these sumptuous, glamourous trends: navy, velvet and gold. Here’s how to style them at home

Navy

Navy is one colour that is making a big splash this season. From sofas and chairs to bedlinen, cushions and accessories, this versatile colour is fast becoming a firm favourite. Navy seems to marry well with so many colours, looking stylish with grey, classic with white, cool with neutrals and natural linen, and offering a contrast to on-trend terracotta. For a more casual look, try mixing navy items with denim cushions and pillowcases. Navy also works well with materials such as wood, concrete and wicker, loves being teamed with gold and brass, and is a stunning colour in velvet.

Velvet

It’s all about velvet right now! This stunning textile can be casual as well as formal, but is always elegant. Velvet is cosy in winter and cool in summer and it just gets better with age. Velvet has been a popular upholstery fabric for centuries because of its durability. It was historically used on furnishings such as headboards, chairs, chaise lounges and curtains. This luxurious textile is fast becoming a modern staple, with plenty of contemporary sofa shapes arriving in velvet (velvet armchairs with brass feet make for a stunning on-trend combo too).

While darker velvet shades such as navy, emerald green and mustard are coming through strongly, soft blush pinks are also growing in popularity. If you love the feel of velvet but aren’t ready to rush out and reupholster your sofa, consider adding a throw cushion to your existing lounge furniture or a small ottoman to your living room. In the bedroom, try sleeping on a velvet pillowcase and adding a velvet throw to your bed.

Gold

If you’ve just added copper to your home, you may want to look away now – this season’s hot new metallic is gold. There are lots of ways to follow this luxe trend: in living areas, try adding cushions with gold details or art with metallic touches. Place a brass or gold side table next to your sofa, a brass tray on your coffee table or use gold wire baskets to reduce clutter. A gold or brass pendant light looks amazing over a kitchen island, while a gold floor, table or desk lamp will add a touch of glamour. Gold and brass looks softer when teamed with dusky pink and blush tones but is also cool and bright with smoky greys, inky blues and emerald greens.
