How to bring the Danish concept of Hygge to your home

The Danish term ‘hygge’ refers to the act of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Hygge is a warm, glowing feeling that is often found while relaxing with good food, family and friends. It’s the cosy warmth and contentment that a cup of tea and a blanket bring on a cold winter’s day.

Put it together

  • This living room is inspired by Danish interior trends – strong colours, mid-century inspired furniture and bold accessories.
  • We have created a cosy, warm space with a burgundy felt statement chair, colourful blanket and textured rug. This lived-in feeling is enhanced with a planter, books and candles.
  • To tone down the strong colour palette we have included more subtle hues in the way of soft blue walls painted in Resene ‘Coast’, along with a sage-coloured stool and shelving. This creates depth in the setting and brings a sense of calm, counteracting the louder pieces.
  • Touches of brass add polish to the room, while greenery helps to soften the harder elements. These materials also offset the wood and soft furnishings in the space. Time to grab a book and get cosy!
