Wood panelling creates instant warmth in a room and is part of a larger trend celebrating the retro-cool vibe of the ’60s and ’70s. From classic light maple to a mix of whitewash grey and blue, this natural surface should be the standout feature in your kitchen. Design the rest of the room with a clean white palette and avoid busy patterns to keep the look modern.
Expert advice: Wooden benchtops should be regularly reoiled when they start to look dull and dry. As a guide, any liquid spillages should ‘bead’ on a well-oiled surface. Should the worst happen, burns or stains can usually be dealt with by gentle sanding and reoiling of the affected area.

Whether it’s a feature splashback or flooring option, be sure to choose your tiles at the beginning of any kitchen renovation and build your design around them.
Expert advice: While tiles make an undeniably striking flooring option, they are naturally cool to the touch. Install underfloor heating to ensure your kitchen remains warm and cosy when the temperature falls.
