Floor-to-ceiling double-glazed sliding doors open onto the deck to give the open-plan living area an indoor-outdoor vibe. Custom black powdercoated louvres provide some shade.

Johanna in the kitchen with her two kids, Nixon 5, and Maelle, 3. “I desperately wanted this house,” she says. “I had visited it five times and just knew we could turn it into a beautiful family home.”

Johanna chose crisp white for the kitchen cabinetry. “It’s classic and will never date,” she says. It’s complemented by black accessories such as the mirrored LG fridge. “I was influenced by industrial and contemporary aesthetics, with a touch of Scandinavian style when it came to the interior,” Johanna says. “I just chose everything that I love from all the interior styles – and put them together and it seems to work.”

The colour palette for the house is white, black and grey, with elements of timber – such as spotted gum wall panelling in the dining room – to help soften the look.

A few of Johanna’s fave pieces are displayed on shelves in the dining area, including a John Baird painting.

Maelle’s bright and cheery bedroom is a great spot for the brother and sister to read together. Bed from Snooze and bedlinen from Siesta Home. Heico mushroom night lamp from Treetop Toy Shop. The monkey and mouse were handmade in Africa.

The simple monochrome palette provides the perfect neutral backdrop for Johanna to add details of colour. “I’ve always been drawn to colour and artistic expression and I love adding bright pops to a house to make it feel like a home,” she says.

Nixon loves his lightning bolt-stickers on his bedroom wall. They were found online, while the robot stickers came from The Design Court.

Minty fresh Italian ceramic wall tiles and a double vanity with calacatta marble benchtop scream elegance in the bathroom, while black tapware from Reece and a concrete NUD pendant add an industrial vibe.

“We wanted the window as the centrepiece in the bathroom, so we created a long marble bench with sinks either side,” Johanna says. The door adds a traditional touch to the modern space.

The Lyles are enjoying their new family home, and only have a few finishing touches to make in the garden, which includes installing a swimming pool next winter. But for ex-snowboarder Johanna, who admits that house renovations are her new adrenaline, there’s no telling how long it will be before her next renovating project begins.
