Kid’s bedroom ideas: How to create a stylish room inspired by nature
Children’s bedrooms are one place in the house where interior-design rules can be thrown out the window. The key objective is to create a space your child loves to play and sleep in. Kids engage with their surroundings in a very tactile way so ensure the room has some textured elements for them to enjoy; these will also give depth to the space by creating a layered look. Watch Shelley Ferguson round up simple ways to add some fun into your child’s room and scroll to find out how to style a ‘nature explorer’ theme.
Getting started
If you aren’t sure where to start when designing your child’s room and feel overwhelmed by the choices on offer, start by having a chat with them about the colours they like or a theme they might want to include. Keep storage in mind and think about a scheme that could see them through to their teenage years.
It helps to choose one item as a foundation piece. This could be a cushion, rug, art print or duvet cover. Then it’s just a matter of pulling furniture and furnishings together that work with that item.
Into the wild
- If your child loves nature or has an adventurous side, consider creating a room full of things that reflect their interests.
- This feature pillowcase inscribed with the phrase “Tonight we sleep, tomorrow we adventure” sets the tone and goes beautifully with the simple checked duvet cover.
- The large chunky knit blanket and cushion not only add warmth to the bed but bring that all-important layering which makes the scheme feel considered and complete – plus, they’re great for snuggling and reading.
- Here we have created a ‘nature explorer’ theme with a bear’s-head wire shelf, raccoon print, wooden animals and rhino bookends.
- This room has a soothing, grounded quality, partly thanks to all the beautiful natural textures on display such as knotted wood, leather, hide and cane. Living foliage takes this textural element up a notch and ties in perfectly with the theme; plant care could be the child’s responsibility.
- Like any space, storage is key, so include a place to store books, toys and decorative objects when designing. If space is tight, this A-frame shelf is a fine option. Its shape allows for easy access and can also accommodate baskets which are handy for storing clothes and toys in.
