Bright paint effects transform these kids’ rooms

These super cute kids’ rooms are a colour burst. Find out how they got the look, so you can too!

Whose rooms are these?
Johanna, 12, and Paulina, 11.

Who came up with these looks?
Mum Kristin Harrison (caterer specialising in weddings and corporate functions).

Where is it?
Mapua near Nelson.

Kristin, what was the inspiration for Paulina’s room?
Her friend has the same bed and hanging chair and she fell in love with it when we visited for a holiday. She’s wanted the loft bed ever since! It’s her favourite thing about the room.

Did Paulina have any other input into her room?
She wanted a pink wall. She was adamant about pink. It only took her 10 minutes to choose the colour at Resene – much to my surprise, as it was very loud and strong, but it looks perfect.

What did you do yourself?
I painted the floor, the walls, made the lampshade and the pictures, the pompoms – pretty much everything!

Both girls have great work areas. Is that important to you?
I like them to have space to draw and craft. Both girls love scrapbooking and making collages so space and light was very important.

What are the key changes you made to Johanna’s room?
I replaced the old carpet with wooden boards and painted them in a bright white, adding splashes of her favourite colours.

Did Johanna have input into her bedroom?
She wanted a white room with mainly white furniture and lots of colourful accessories.

How did you come up with the triangle paint effect?
Johanna made the pillow on her bed with triangle material from Spotlight, and this inspired the design on her wall. She chose the colours too.

What is her favourite feature?
Her triangle wall and the pillow and throw she sewed herself.
